Winning essays will be published during the month of April on the Georgia Civil War Commission FaceBook page with only the name of the student provided. All essays submitted will receive a certificate of participation.
Contest Rules
- Contest is open to all students in Georgia, 5th through 12th grade, public, private or homeschool.
- Essays must be at least (there is no word limit if scholarly thought process is still being used) 500 words for 5th through 8th grade and 750 words for 9th through 12th grade.
- A title page and bibliography page is required for all essays. Students should use the form that is taught at his/her school.
- Footnotes are required for 9th to 12th grade essays. The contestant should use the format taught at his/her school.
- Each essay must use a minimum of one book and one internet source. Wikipedia is not an allowable website source.
- All essays must be typed and submitted electronically to georgiacivilwarcommission@gmail.com
- Each essay entry must provide name of student, grade, teacher’s name, name of school, teacher’s email, teacher’s contact number, parent’s name, address, parent’s contact number, and parent’s email address.
- Plagiarism is not allowed and will result in the essay being disqualified.
- A student may only submit one essay.
- Failure to abide by these rules will disqualify the student’s essay.
- All essays must be emailed on or before February 12, 2019 to be considered. Winners will be announced by April 1, 2019.
JudgingAll essays become the property of the Georgia Civil War Commission and will not be returned. A committee of judges will be given the essays to score. The highest total in each category will win first place. Any family member of a Commissioner is not eligible to compete.
