Georgia Civil War Commission
Issue 3 / Volume 1 / Winter 2019

We want to help finance your next field trip

Are you teaching your class or school group about the Civil War?  Would you like to bring your lesson to life via a field trip?  Is a field trip cost prohibitive?

Georgia has sights, sounds, and stories about the Civil War that cannot be found anywhere else.  With the plethora of places to visit, the entire state is a field trip mecca; however, for many classrooms, the cost of visiting even local sites makes a trip prohibitive.

We can help!

The Georgia Civil War Commission’s Field Trip Fund provides funding and assistance to K-12 classes, school club student, and home schoolers, that would allow students and teachers/chaperones to visit Civil War sites within Georgia.

2018-2019 Art & Essay contests are underway

We invite K-12 students from around the state to participate.  Public school, private school, charter school, and home school students are eligible.  Entries must be received on or before February 19, 2019.

We require the works to be original (no plagiarism) and have other guidelines as well.  This is the third year of the contests and we are encouraged by the students’ excitement.  Contest winners receive cash prizes, certificates, recognition as a part of Georgia’s history, shared on our Facebook page and featured in a calendar or booklet.

The topics for this year’s contests are:

  • Essay: What happened to the women of Roswell and/or New Manchester Mill’s Workers during the Civil War?
  • Art: Georgia’s Locomotive Chase
